Other reasons for re-upholstery:
Damage: the leather, vinyl or fabric is beyond repair.
Cost effective: Expensive furniture might have great structure and bones, but the fabric might be outdated or worn. Reupholstering could be less expensive than buying a new piece.
Preserving Heirlooms: If your furniture has been in the family and you know you can't find it anywhere else, sometimes a spruce is all it will need.
